Colby Thrift: Founder, Electrical Engineer

Colby obtained a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alabama. Colby began his professional career working for Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa through the university's engineering co-op program. As an electrical engineering co-op, Colby worked under a senior electrical engineer (PE) and spent time in maintenance throughout each area of the mill. Upon graduation, Colby began working as a melt shop process technician for Nucor Steel Birmingham. Colby held responsibilities of improving electrical arc furnace regulation, managing and implementing capital projects, and took initiative to also take on the responsibilities of managing the power system infrastructure.

After expanding his knowledge in industrial maintenance, automation and power distribution, Colby transferred to Nucor Steel Sedalia as the only Power Systems Engineer for the entire site. Colby continued advancing his skill set by working alongside large engineering firms, skilled co-workers, and construction contractors. Colby held a key role of correcting design issues in the power distribution infrastructure, modifying designs, designing/implementing new industrial tech solutions, and interfacing with the power company to bring Evergy's largest consumer of electricity onto the grid. Colby also served as interim Electrical Lead and then Automation Engineer to refine production processes and maintenance. Colby passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam to obtain his EIT license, and is working to obtain his Professional Engineering (PE) license in May 2021. Colby is very passionate and has a strong work ethic. Colby brings in-depth electrical engineering skills along with a positive attitude and vision for the future of industrial automation.

Adam Haney: Founder, Automation Engineer

Adam developed a passion for industrial process control and maintenance during his six years as a Nuclear Electrician’s Mate (EMN/SS) in the United States Navy. Serving onboard the nuclear ballistic missile submarine USS Tennessee (SSBN-734G), he developed a love for the camaraderie of service and the overwhelming sense of pride associated with accomplishment in the face of adversity.

Following an honorable discharge from the United States Navy, Adam began his civilian career as a Hot Mill Shift Electrician at Nucor Steel Arkansas; a leading manufacturer of hot rolled sheet steel. Under the tutelage of fantastic mentors, he continued to solve difficult problems in high-stress situations, as well as writing PLC programs, editing and creating HMI’s, and designing or upgrading existing automation solutions.

After four years at Nucor Steel Arkansas, Adam was selected as the Melt Shop Automation Engineer for construction and commissioning of Nucor’s first rebar micro-mill in Sedalia, MO. Again, he was presented with the opportunity of serving alongside some remarkable men and women that enriched him both personally and professionally.

It was the demanding and rewarding task of assisting in the start-up of a $400 million steel mill that led Adam to co-found MORA Technologies with the mission of serving customers by maximizing their business through automation.
